The animals were beautiful

The animals were beautiful is a series of haunting and ethereal portraits of strangers travelling on the London Underground. The series depicts the people, reflections, textures, poetry and abstractions of subterranean London life. Each photo was shot on an iPhone 5c, and the images were ‘processed’ in Instagram as if it was a digital darkroom on the go, and then published on the app as I finished my journey. The title of the series is in reference to a quote by Bruce Davidson about his own Subway series and shooting in New York, on his doorstep - he "didn’t need to go to the Serengeti plains, the animals were right here and they were beautiful”.
